Experience one of the most fascinating countries on earth in a particularly impressive way and follow some ancient trekking trails through the Himalayas of Bhutan. This relatively small kingdom, located north of India on the southern border with Tibet (China), captivates visitors with its beautiful panoramas of densely forested valleys in front of white-peaked mountain giants, as well as its friendly people, who live in a Buddhist culture that is thousands of years old. It is where they place “Gross National Happiness” above economic growth. With a little luck, the approach to Paro, a small town in the east of the country, will give you a first impression of the intoxicatingly beautiful views that will accompany you over the next 12 days.

After a day’s stay in Paro, which includes the opportunity to visit the fascinating Taktsang monastery on a 900 m high cliff and to acclimatize to the altitude, the trek begins on traditional paths, past terraced fields, through orchards and untouched forests. Again and again, the trail climbs gently, followed by descents down to the banks of a clear river that we will cross, over scree slopes and mountain passes that offer breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. We will be able to discover many different old monasteries and fortresses on the mountain slopes. The beautiful nature of Bhutan can be seen in the rhododendron forests, mystical waterfalls and vast, seemingly untouched mountain meadows. In addition to the diverse flora, interesting animals will cross our path again and again, including yaks and gaurs (bison), various species of deer and many different types of sheep and goats.

The people we meet in small villages or around the country’s important sights are happy to give us an insight into their everyday lives and their Buddhist culture. Due to the maximum altitude of almost 5,000 m above sea level, this trekking is quite demanding in terms of health and fitness, but as the routes are easy to walk, the travel module is also suitable for hikers who are crossing their personal bridge to Bhutan, into the fascinating world of the Himalayas, for the first time.
