City tour Kolkata
Private tours – City tours, Nature/ culture/ hiking options
Tour description
Discover with us the different faces of Kolkata, India’s second largest city. Situated on the mighty Hooghly River, Kolkata was founded in 1690 as a trading post of the East India Company and quickly became the largest colonial trading center in Asia – as well as the capital of India. With its magnificent Victorian buildings, ornamental fountains, cobbled sidewalks and numbered lampposts, it reflects European architecture and sensuality. However, to escape the relentless summer humidity and heat in the swampy delta of the Ganges and Brahmaputra, the capital was moved to Delhi in 1911 – and Kolkota was left to its own devices.
The monumental colonial structures here are not nearly as well preserved as in Mumbai – collapsing masonry, peeling paint and moss-covered walls dominate the picture of historical witnesses. However, the proud citizens of the city of 15 million people enthusiastically defend Kolkata’s advantages over other Indian metropolises. Warm, helpful, charming and with a keen sense of humor, the Bengalis love to passionately discuss the advantages of their city. Meet the people with us and take a look behind the scenes of this exciting city. We will also be happy to help you choose your accommodation in Kolkata.
